UNDERSTANDING AN IEP

This month is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month, which focuses on “the importance of fostering a society where people with disabilities are empowered to contribute to their communities.” (1) Youth with disabilities, just like any other youth, deserve a high-quality education that supports all their needs. Here at CYS, we work to ensure all the youth we work with have their rights and needs met. One way to advocate on behalf of youth with developmental disabilities is by understanding what an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is and how it can be utilized for the benefit of a youth, their family and school administration.

What Are IEPs?

IEPs create “an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities.” (2) No matter your role in a youth’s life, it is important to learn more about IEPs and the impact they can have on improving a youth’s home and school experience. There are existing resources families can explore, check out our resource sheet below to learn more:
